COLD ROOMS

Walk-in cold rooms and freezer rooms

We install, service and repair walk-in cold rooms and freezer rooms for kitchens, butchers, shops and food businesses across Greater Manchester and Yorkshire. That covers the refrigeration plant, the controls and the room itself, from the evaporator to the door seals. When a room starts drifting warm, we look for the cause before adding refrigerant or swapping parts.

What goes into a cold room

Inside the room, an evaporator with fans takes heat out of the air. Outside, a condensing unit gets rid of that heat. Copper pipework, a controller and the insulated panels and door hold the whole thing together, and a weak point in any one of them shows up as a room that won't hold temperature.

On a new install we size the evaporator and condensing unit for what you're storing and how often the door gets opened. A butcher's chiller with deliveries coming in all morning has a very different load from a stock room that's opened twice a day.

Defrost problems and iced-up evaporators

Every time the door opens, warm, damp air gets in and freezes onto the evaporator coil. The defrost cycle is meant to clear it. If the heaters, the timer settings or the drain line aren't doing their job, the ice builds up, the air stops flowing and the room warms up even though the plant is running flat out.

Freezer rooms suffer from this most. We check defrost heaters, termination settings, drain line heaters and the door seals, because a torn gasket or a door that doesn't close properly lets in the moisture that causes the problem in the first place.

Alarms and records

A temperature alarm that nobody hears is no use, so we test alarms and probe readings as part of every service. After each visit you get a written report by email with the readings, what we checked and photos of the equipment.

Questions we get asked

Why is my cold room iced up?

Usually it's a defrost fault, a blocked drain or a door that isn't sealing, which lets damp air in. We'd check all three, because clearing the ice without fixing the cause means it comes back.

How often should a cold room be serviced?

Twice a year suits most cold rooms. Freezer rooms and rooms with heavy door traffic can need more frequent visits.

Can you replace just the evaporator or condensing unit?

Yes. If the room and the rest of the system are sound, we can replace the part that has failed and check it's matched to the rest of the plant.

Do you work on cold rooms you didn't install?

Yes. We service and repair cold rooms whoever fitted them.
